چکیده

Pesce, G. L.: The Zinzulusa cave: an endangered biodiversity »hot spot« of South Italy. Nat. Croat., Vol. 10, No. 3., 207–212, 2001, Zagreb. The historical, geological, faunistic and ecological characteristics of the Zinzulusa cave (Castro Marina, South Italy), one of the most remarkable anchialine aquifers of Italy, are presented in this paper. The results of recent explorations and discoveries, in both the above-ground and submerged part of the cave, are pointed out. The cave is at present endangered and it requires measures aimed at keeping aquifer levels adequate to assure protection of its precious stygofauna. A list of threatened species living in the cave is appended.

Metagenome Sequencing Revealed Rhodococcus Dominance in Farpuk Cave, Mizoram, India, an Eastern Himalayan Biodiversity Hot Spot Region

The present study employed 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing to survey the prokaryotic microbiota on Farpuk Cave, revealing a diverse bacterial community with 4,021 operational taxonomical units (OTUs), mainly dominated by the genus Rhodococcus. Moreover, 18.17% of the OTUs were unclassified at the phylum level, suggesting the existence of novel bacterial species.

A Parasite Reveals Cryptic Phylogeographic History of Its Host: The Colonization of the Western Mediterranean Islands

This study compares the colonisation patterns of the field mouse Apodemus sylvaticus (Muridae) and its parasite Heligmosomoides polygyrus (Heligmosomoidea) in 8 Western Mediterranean islands. Respectively 690 bp and 501 bp of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene were sequenced in 44 H. polygyrus and 49 A. sylvaticus. The results reveal the congruence between both species’ insular Mediterranean c...

Neutral ecological theory reveals isolation and rapid speciation in a biodiversity hot spot.

South Africa's Mediterranean-climate fynbos shrubland is a hot spot of species diversity, but its diversity patterns contrast strongly with other high-diversity areas, including the Amazon rain forest. With its extremely high levels of endemism and species turnover, fynbos is made up of dissimilar local communities that are species-rich but relatively poor in rare species. Using neutral ecologi...

Geographic Distribution of Endangered Species in the United States

Geographic distribution data for endangered species in the United States were used to locate "hot spots" of threatened biodiversity. The hot spots for different species groups rarely overlap, except where anthropogenic activities reduce natural habitat in centers of endemism. Conserving endangered plant species maximizes the incidental protection of all other species groups. The presence of end...
